He walked into his room and stood in one place. He stared at his walls and saw nothing but juvenile posters. Vanilla Ice….New Kids on the Block….MC Hammer…and Donald Duck. Wait….for a fifteen year in the 90s, most of those posters made sense. But, Donald Duck? He made a mental note to change that. He sat on his bed and relived the days events.
1. Lea walked back into his life.
2. Had fun. Too much fun.
3. And he was falling for her.
He cringed at the thought of number 3. He said to himself…
“I don’t do this. I can’t. She lives too far. This won’t work.”
But, she was perfect in his eyes. His heart had never been in this territory before. He stepped out of his room and headed to the kitchen. He grabbed to the handle to the refrigerator when he heard a voice from behind him.
He turned around and saw his mother smiling back at him.
“No…she’s not.” The lovestuck teenager stomped back to his room. He could hear his mom giggling behind him.
The next day’s morning seemed to crawl to a halt. He looked at the clock…10:05. The wedding started at 10. He did simple math in his head. A wedding is an hour….add a reception, 3 hours. Maybe done at 4? That’s too long. He wondered what to do until then. He pressed power on his Super Nintendo game system and disappeared into a world filled with 32-bit goodness.
The doorbell rang. He could hear his mother talking and laughing. He put the controller down. And put his ear to his bedroom door….he was startled when a knock reverberated his door. He opened it.
“Hey cutie. Whoa, didn’t fix your hair eh? Unless you meant it to be crooked like that.”
He panicked. And touched his usually spiky hair to confirm it.
“Haha…yeah, I haven’t fixed it yet. You’re here early?”
“Reception was boring. Besides no cute boys to dance with…plus I knew I had a cute boy waiting for me at home.”
He blushed. Lea heard her Aunt call her to the kitchen.
“I’ll be back.” She turned away to check on her aunt. He rushed to the bathroom and went to work on his hair. Out came the hair gel..the mousse…the hair spray, all the necessary tools to make his hair spiky and shiny. Twenty minutes passed, he looked into the mirror one last time. He walked into the kitchen and surveyed the area for Lea. Not there. He walked back to his room and heard laughter coming from his sister’s room. He put his ear to the door. He heard muffled girl talk.
He pressed his ear harder to the door.
“…You don’t want a boyfriend, boys are assholes.” There was anger behind Lea’s voice. She continued…
“But your brother is nice. Does he have a girlfriend? I’m sure he does.”
“Ewww..my brother? Gross.” Thanks, sis.
He went back into his room and continued his video game playing. It didn’t take long before a familiar knock was at his door. Lea walked in and left the door open. She sat next to him.
He had a lot to say but his heart stopped him from saying it. He thought about what he heard in the other room. Lea has had boyfriends. She was experienced. What did she expect from him? He wanted to tell her how he felt. He could feel his heart beating out of his chest. It had to be said.
“Look, Lea….I like you. Ok, I just have to say it. I have so much fun with you. You make me laugh. Ok, I don’t know what to do. You are going to go back to LA…and I’m gonna be here…stuck with these feelings for you.” He noticed his hands shaking a bit. He was terrified.
Lea stood up and walked towards the door…and closed it.
He continued to stare at his tv screen, too scared to look at her.
“Look at me. Hey, look at me.” She said gently. He stopped to look at her.
“I know. Ok, I know this sucks. But, I don’t want to leave you too. That airplane ride is going to be silent, not because I don’t want to talk….it will be quiet because I would be thinking about you. I would just be sitting there thinking about us. Missing you. I have feelings for you too .. and I don’t know what to do either.”
They sat in silence. The suddenly depressed spiky haired teen heard his sister yell out Lea’s name. Perfect timing, sis. She turned away to leave but stopped.
“Come here please.”
He stood up and stared into her beautiful black eyes. She grabbed the back of his head and kissed him. He stood there surprised. But, he went along with it. He melted in her arms. Eternity seemed to pass. His sister yelled Lea’s name out again. Lea pulled away and walked out the door in silence.
Nothing seemed to matter anymore. He was in too deep now. His heart floated out of his chest…he was elated. He was looking for answers….and received none. He had even more questions now.
Lea closed the door behind her. She walked down the hallway and stopped in her tracks. She smiled to herself. She was falling for the spiky haired boy. But, little did she know that in 48 hours…her feelings would turn to hate and anger for that same spiky haired boy.
